Tomnafinnoge Wood Symposium 2019, Co Wicklow
For the Tomnafinnoge Sculpture symposium I wanted to carve figures that would seem to be "of the woods". The resulting diptych sculpture "Gateway" was carved and set as an entrance portal to a shaded glade. The two figures are blocky, roughly chiseled caryatids in short oak columns. Male and female, these represent a duality within nature that is both benign and malign in its disinterest. Rather than classical Greek caryatids these are reminiscent of the late bronze age "Ralaghan Man", an anthropomorphic, carved wooden figure found in the bog of Ralaghan Co Cavan.
You can read more about the symposium in a review by Lorraine Whelan for Circa art magazine.
